Frequently asked questions

What can I expect from my first visit?

The initial consultation will include recording personal contact details, a medical history including past and present medical conditions, current medications and an assessment of the problem you are presenting with. The possible effects that you may experience from the treatment will be discussed and you will be asked to sign a consent form. A treatment plan will be tailored to meet your individual needs. During the first visit a few fine single-use sterile needles are gently inserted for a short time to see how you respond to acupuncture as all people are different. The needles are usually inserted near to where the problem or pain is but commonly in other areas too like hands and feet.

All treatments are carried out whilst you are lying or semi-reclined on a medical couch. The couch is slightly wider and with a thicker base than most couches for your comfort and can be adjusted in three parts. It has an optional face hole for those lying on their front who would like to keep their neck straight for added comfort.

How long is a session and course of treatment?

The initial appointment is usually up to one hour. Follow up appointments vary depending on the type of acupuncture, how many needles being used and the length of time they need to in for. Some points only require the needle to be in for a few seconds and others up to thirty minutes. You should expect to see improvement after a course of six treatments, however some people may feel benefit from the first treatment, others longer and some not at all. This greatly depends on the individual and the condition being treated. Treatments are usually once a week to start with, then at longer intervals depending on response.

What and how can I expect to feel?

The needles are very fine but you may feel a small pin prick as it passes through the superficial nerves in the skin which may last a few seconds. After that people report a variety of feelings from nothing to warmth, or a light or heavy sensation or mild ache around where the needles are inserted, which usually passes quickly. Some people may feel rested or tired after acupuncture and others energised or no difference at all. During your initial consultation we will discuss what you may expect in more detail.
